How to Let Go of What's Holding You Back
2025 is among us, and we want to take a second to talk about how to let go of what is holding us back.
Letting go of the past doesn’t mean that we can’t reflect on a negative experience, some bad choices, or bad decisions that we’ve made. On the contrary, we want to learn and grow from these things.
However, we don’t want to stay stuck here; we don’t want to stay stuck in the cycle of thinking about our negative choices and habits. We want to create new habits, new patterns, and new memories.
If you’re ready to let go of what’s holding you back, try following these steps:
Let God transform you.
Romans 12:2 says, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” God desires to transform us and our thoughts, but we must let Him. It makes no difference if we read our Bibles, worship, and pray, only to return to our old thinking. When negative thoughts or feelings of the past try to crop up, find Bible verses about the good things God is doing in your life. Meditate on these verses, and let God transform your thoughts!
Don’t self-sabotage.
When you see progress occurring in your life, don’t fight it! Change can be scary, but if we revert to our old (and sometimes more “comfortable”) ways of living, we can invite old habits that will ruin our progress. Reflect on the problematic areas from this year and identify what made them challenging. Was it the people you were around? Was it a lack of boundaries? Was it a lack of self-discipline? Whatever the case, commit yourself to not falling back into these old habits in the new year.
Stay connected to God in prayer.
You may be reading the first two points and thinking, “How is this even possible?!” Well, the good news is that all of this is possible with God. This is why staying connected to Him through prayer every day is vital. Pray about the things you want to leave in the past. Pray for His strength to help you move forward. Pray for wisdom to make the right decisions.
