How to Balance Work and Home Life

Finding time for work, family, and yourself can be challenging. If you’re struggling to juggle it all, follow these six steps:

Set boundaries.

Create a clear separation between your work and personal life. It’s tempting to “take work home,” but trying to divide your attention between the two leads to burnout over time and makes it difficult to focus on either area well.

Take breaks.

Whether working at the office or online from home, take breaks away from your tasks throughout the day. Try going for a brief walk, looking out a window, or listening to enjoyable music. These minor resets will help you get back to your tasks with renewed energy and focus.

Manage your time.

In a day and age where multitasking seems more achievable than ever, it is still impossible to complete several taskssimultaneously and do them well. Create a routine. Go to bed around the same time, wake up around the same time each day, and prioritize your work tasks so that you can leave time for family and self-care.

Ask for help.

If you’ve heard the saying “it takes a village,” it’s more true now than ever. More couples are dual-income earners, which means both partners have added responsibility when raising children. Being able to ask for help when you need it increases communication between family members and provides opportunities for growing your community. Community is also vital for those who are single, empty nesters, or elderly. We were not meant to live life alone.

Prioritize your health.

Staying on top of routine healthcare appointments is a form of self-care. By taking care of your physical and mental health, you are giving yourself time to spend with others.

Unplug.

In this digital age, where you can be reached 24/7, disconnecting is more critical than ever. By using a part of your day to practice prayer, meditation, or journaling, you give yourself time to recover from stress and transition from work life to your personal life. When possible, take time with loved ones away from the distraction of technology and reconnect through time together, engaging in other meaningful activities.
